The new single "Faustine" from Swedish jazz artist Oskar Schönning, the first taste of his new live studio album "Peurto", will be released as a digital download on October 10. The album itself will follow on October 17 with a release party at the same place it was recorded, Teaterstudio Lederman in Stockholm, and it will include a showing of a documentary on the recording as well as DJ,s special guests and more. Lucky for me, I've already had a chance to preview the single and the film and can assure you that it is excellent and will definitely be spinning said single on my radio show in the near future. Norwegian acts Simon Says No! and Real Ones along with Grand Avenue from Denmark are playing a "Stranded in Stereo"-sponsored CMJ showcase at Rehab on October 22. Of course, you shouldn't even consider going when my own event is happening at the same time at Bowery Electric with Hello Saferide, Firefox AK and Juvelen (and is totally free btw), but hey- you are free to make your own bad decisions.

The reunion that I'm sure everyone has been holding their breath for is finally happening: Ace of Base is back with a new single, a greatest hits boxset and yes, even a new tour. Read more at Aftonbladet: http://www.aftonbladet.se/nojesliv/musik/article3484377.ab (in Swedish)

MP3: They Live - My favorit color is gold

They Live is the solo project of one of the guys from Pistol Disco, so that fact alone should give you a good idea of what to expect. No, not half as good, just half as noisy. Think: streamlined. You still get the same electro-Kraut mindmelt, but the overall effect is relaxed hypnosis as opposed to total white-noise amnesia. Early Days' drug music hearkens back to a more innocent time of free love and posi vibes, this stuff is more concerned with present day consciousness obliteration. If you've been reading the news recently and want to stop the ride to get off, here's a five-and-a-half minute breather. Not quite nihilism, just annihilation.

Tobias Hellkvist/Metronomes - SplitTobias Hellkvist/Metronomes
Split
Dolceola Records

7

Tobias Hellkvist's segment of the split opens strongly with "Vintervarm" from the album "Sides". The following track, "Always problems", is thickly instrumented, as many of Hellkvist's other compositions are, reminiscent of Broken Social Scene's more experimental efforts. At six minutes, though, "Always problems" doesn't have the movement or flair that the majority of "Sides" holds, but as a track on a split EP, the track entertains. "Ships of the North Atlantic" is the standout on Side A, demonstrating Hellkvist's talents as a vocalist.

Scotland's Metronomes work in a similar vein to Tobias Hellkvist: strata of guitars bleeding out their reverb-heavy lines into compositions that tread the territory between downhearted and uplifted. Metronomes would not feel out of place on Polyvinyl Records' stellar roster in the 90s. "Bridge and tunnel" has the quiet confidence of an American Football or a Sea and Cake track, gliding along on its clean, delayed guitar stabs, and the other contributions to the split continue this Midwestern indie/postrock feel.

The split is well-balanced, though skews ever slightly towards Tobias Hellkvist's faculties. It's still worth the effort to track down, especially for anyone who still holds a torch for acts like Owen and Cap'n Jazz.
